Blackpool MP Urges Government to Reform Taxi Licensing in Parliament (Watch Video)

A Blackpool MP has called on the government to urgently reform taxi and private hire licensing rules, warning that the current system is failing passengers and undermining local drivers.

Speaking in Parliament today, the MP highlighted concerns over the growing number of out-of-town private hire vehicles operating in Blackpool through ride-hailing apps such as Uber. These vehicles are licensed in other local authority areas but can legally operate in towns like Blackpool, a loophole that many councils and trade bodies have long criticised.

Safety and fairness at risk

The MP stressed that this issue is not just about fairness for drivers, but also about passenger safety and public confidence in the system.

“For Blackpool, this is about protecting public safety, supporting local jobs and making sure the system works fairly for everyone. Currently, we face real challenges with out-of-town private hire vehicles operating through apps without proper Blackpool licences. That undermines the hardworking local taxi trade, puts passengers at risk and damages confidence in our town,” they said.

Calls for stronger rules and enforcement

The MP urged ministers to strengthen licensing rules, improve enforcement powers for councils, and ensure a level playing field for all drivers.

“We urgently need stronger licensing rules, proper enforcement and fair regulations that stop companies exploiting loopholes at the expense of local drivers.”

The speech follows ongoing dialogue with Uber, where concerns about the impact of cross-border hiring on the town’s taxi industry have already been raised.

Boosting Blackpool’s reputation

The MP argued that reforming the system would not only benefit local drivers but also support Blackpool’s wider economy and reputation as a major UK seaside destination.

“A safe, fair and well-regulated transport system will not only protect passengers and drivers but also boost our local economy and strengthen Blackpool’s reputation as a great place to live, work and visit.”

The government’s response has yet to confirm any immediate reforms, but campaigners across the UK will be watching closely as pressure grows for nationwide changes to close licensing loopholes.
