A fleet of London’s iconic black cabs will soon set off on one of the most heart-warming annual events in the taxi trade — the Magical Taxi Tour. Organised by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers (WCHCD), the three-day journey takes seriously ill and life-limited children on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disneyland Paris.
A Convoy of Kindness
Every September, around 90 licensed London taxi drivers volunteer their time and vehicles for the event. The convoy, which departs from Canary Wharf, is escorted by the City of London Police, London Ambulance Service, and breakdown teams from the AA. Once across the Channel, the French Gendarmerie Nationale ensures the children and their families are safely guided to Disneyland Paris.
The sight of a long procession of black taxis travelling together has become a symbol of generosity and unity within the London taxi trade.
How It Works
The tour began in 1994 with around 50 taxis and has grown significantly since then. Today, more than 200 children take part each year, each accompanied by carers, parents, or medical staff where needed.
Taxi drivers give up their time for free, while sponsors and donations cover the cost of fuel, accommodation, food, and park tickets. It is estimated to cost around £1,500 per taxi to make the trip possible, meaning sponsorship plays a crucial role in keeping the event alive.
The Impact
For many of the children, the Magical Taxi Tour is more than just a holiday — it is a chance to experience joy away from hospitals and treatments, creating lasting memories for them and their families.
The event also highlights the strong community spirit of the London taxi trade, often overlooked in day-to-day coverage. Thousands of children have enjoyed the trip since the event’s launch over 30 years ago, thanks to the commitment of drivers and the generosity of supporters.

The next Magical Taxi Tour is set to take place 12–14 September 2025, continuing the tradition of bringing smiles and hope to children who face incredible challenges in their daily lives.
