Birmingham Private Hire Driver Discovers Newborn Kittens Under His Car

A private hire driver in Birmingham had an unexpected start to his morning school run after discovering a litter of newborn kittens hidden beneath his car.

Surprise Discovery in Kings Heath

On Monday, 8 September, Syed Miah had just returned from the school run in Kings Heath around 9am when he heard faint meowing sounds. Initially, he and his neighbour searched nearby bushes and plants but found nothing.

It was only after his wife suggested he check under the vehicle that Syed spotted movement using a selfie stick camera. To his amazement, a tiny kitten’s tail was sticking out from beneath his Toyota C-HR.

Rescue at Local Garage

Wanting to ensure the kittens’ safety, Syed drove carefully to Fast Fit Auto Centre on Vicarage Road, Kings Heath, where garage owners Richard and Kellie Tootell quickly offered their help.

Richard lifted the Toyota onto the ramp and gently removed the lower engine cover. At first, the couple feared the worst when the purring sounds stopped. However, to their relief, every kitten was alive and well.

Syed, 36, said:

“I’m very, very glad they were alive. They must have been born overnight. They were under my car and had been on their first journey. I’ve used the garage before, they are my local and they are amazing.”

Reunited With Their Mother

With advice from a cat rescue volunteer, Syed began searching for the kittens’ mother. Asking around neighbours, he eventually found the cat — who had been frantically looking for her missing babies.

The mother and her kittens were successfully reunited and are now under the care of the rescue volunteer.

Kellie Tootell said:

“We are over the moon. We are huge animal lovers and are even jokingly calling ourselves the Fast Cat Auto Centre.”
